MISSISSIPPI WOMEN IN BLUES Gallery space in the Leontyne Price Library at Rust College Feb. 1st – Feb. 28, 2018 opening reception Thursday Feb.1, 2018 5 pm-7 pm 150 Rust Avenue Holly Springs, Ms 38635 Open to the public In celebration of Black History month FANCY! and The Son and Friends of Junior Kimbrough along with Leontyne Price Library at Rust College present Mississippi Women in Blues an exhibit focusing on the presence of Afro-American women in the Mississippi Blues world. A presentation of photographs, films and archival material shines a light on these mysterious creatures. Many were popular artists in their day but have fallen into obscurity, and off the radar. Afro -American Women are ubiquitous figures within the Mississippi Blues community. Black females appear as muse, singer, musician, audience member, dancer, manger, and club worker, but who remain largely uncredited and invisible. Default players never raising to the ranks as band member. Only seen as willing and capable players, not Blues musicians. The exhibition focuses on Holly Springs residents musicians Ellen Jefferies and Mary Coleman. Also Como area ladies Jessie Mae Hemphill and Sharde Thomas who have gained international recognition for the their music. Photos, films, and other archival material on view was provided by private collections, and learning institutions. All funding for the exhibition was granted through private donation, or in kind funds, and with the generous support from Rust College Leontyne Price Library, UNC Wilson Library Folklife Collection. Local Bluesman Robert Kimbrough Sr. will open up The Hut in Holly Springs for a night of live blues music featuring the ladies.
Robert and the BluesConnection will host a traditional juke joint style night much like Robert’s father. Local legend and Holly Springs resident Cotton-Patch Blues musician Junior Kimbrough who performed in and operated juke joints in the area for decades. Local ladies slated to perform are #1 Juke joint dancer Sherena Boyce daughter of Como musician RL Boyce, from Jackson Ms. Iretta Sanders, and loved local DJ from The Change Lady Jammer. The floor is open to others to join the jam. Also screening rare and unreleased live performance footage of Junior Kimbrough and the Soul Blues Boys filmed at the Chewalla Rib Shack and an interview with Junior, plus footage from this past May 2017 Kimbrough Cotton-Patch Blues Festival.

Sherena Boyce asks the lucky crowd on that rainy night in New Orleans. It was Mardi Gras, but Como, MS Blues legend RL Boyce was in the Circle Bar and with the support of Paul Artigues and Todd Mathews, on loan from the Thunder Band, he settled in and grooved an incredible set of down-home, hypnotic hill country blues. This is unfiltered RL BOYCE at his very best. No guest stars. No hot leads. No slide guitar. ALL BOOGIE.
RL Boyce’s music is rooted in long-standing traditions of the deep south and family history. Otha Turner is RL’s aunt’s cousin. RL first saw Otha play at a family picnic when he was twelve years old. In awe of the respect that Otha commanded with his fife and drum band, RL decided then and there that is what he wanted to be. That guy. And at the age of fourteen, he joined the popular fife and drum outfits of the North Delta area of Mississippi.
RL played drums with Otha Turner for thirty years. But he also played drums and recorded with Napoleon Strickland, another popular regional drum and fife line-up, plus the SHE-WOLF herself, Jessie Mae Hemphill. After meeting about 1980 through Otha, RL and Jessie Mae forged a deep and lasting friendship which inspired RL to pick up the guitar and delevoped his own distinct guitar sound. RL’s style is rooted in country blues. He combines the traditional guitar picking and tuning similar to hometown legends Fred McDowell and R.L. Burnside to create a simple, trance-inducing song. Peculiar in phrasing, RL’s style shines on this recording. He effortlessly leads the band from one classic RL tune to the next with his sparse, soothing sound mesmerizing listeners.
RL’s playing is minimal, meandering, spontaneous and loose but bound to a precise repetitive, entrancing rhythm. His unmistakable style is easily recognizable. Along with the influences mentioned above, the classic country blues guitar styles of John Lee Hooker & Lightnin’ Hopkins can be gleaned but accentuated with haunting, high pitched vocals reminiscent of Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt.
RL first recorded with Otha and Napoleon in 1974 and continued recording throughout the 80’s and 90’s. In the mid-80’s he recorded with Jessie Mae on David Evans’ stellar Memphis label High Water Records. RL Boyce’s excellent debut release on Sutro Park, 2013, is now followed by RL’s first live recording release. Joined by his eldest daughter, Sherena on Tamborine, she helps juke up the joint. You can take the man out of Mississippi – but you can’t take the Mississippi out of the man.

Scheduled events kick off Friday night May 12th, an opening reception for the exhibit The Life and Legacy of Junior Kimbrough at Rust College in the gallery space located in Leontyne Price Library. The exhibition will feature photos by Bill Steber, Yancey Allison, Adam Smith, David Stevens and David Katzenstein whose 1988 photos of Junior’s house party were recently featured in Oxford American. Also photos by famed folklorist Cheryl Thurber.

Notes from Jas about the footage “Junior Kimbrough playing in his juke joint outside of Holly Springs, Mississippi, 1990-09-23 (1:02) This broadcast-quality film contains outstanding footage of Kimbrough playing in his rural juke joint with a bassist and drummer. It was shot early in the afternoon, with very few people in the juke. After his performance, Junior consented to doing an interview on film. Jas Obrecht is the primary behind-the-camera interviewer; Peter Lee, a South African who at the time was Editor of Living Blues magazine, joins in the conversation. This part of the film served as the Q/A section of the article “Junior Kimbrough: Mississippi Juke Joint Blues,”Guitar Player, Aug. ’95.”
Plus amateur photos, video, candid snap shots, newspaper clippings, magazines, personal items, and collected stories.
Many items were generously loaned from the University of Memphis Music Library, University of Mississippi Blues Archive, UNC Southern Folklife Collection at Chapel Hill, Tulane University Special Collections, and Rust College Archive.

An all day guitar workshop with Robert Kimbrough Sr., David Kimbrough Jr., Kinney Kimbrough, Garry Burnside, Eric Deaton, and Joe Ayers.
Learn the Cotton-Patch guitar style from the masters themselves. Spend the day with the your heroes and learn from the pros. All of the musician learned and played with Junior. The guitar workshop provides a chance to learn and play along side master bluesmen. Robert and the crew will sit you down and teach the fundamentals of playing the blues and demonstrate their styles in an up-close and personal environment. This is an incredible opportunity to sit and observe and learn from true artists on their own turf.
The Kimbroughs, Burnsides, Eric Deaton, and Joe Ayers share an infectious enthusiasm when discussing Junior’s life and music. Generous with their knowledge on the subject of Cotton-Patch Blues Mississippi’s musician deceptively masterful skill effortlessly executed inspires. Keepers and teachers of Cotton-Patch Blues an historic American tradition that flourishes in the North Hills of Mississippi today.
They will answer questions, provide instruction and have you jamming with them before the day is done. Join Robert and the band on stage later that evening at The Hut. Beginners and seasoned ax-slingers welcome. Bring your guitar, a desire to learn and your appetite. Food will be available!

Sunday morning meet up at The Hut for a hearty country breakfast with Robert and Joe before embarking on a guided historic tour around Holly Springs. Visit sights significant to Junior’s life: Junior’s home he shared with his sons, Marshall Scrubbs Club, Sammy’s Rib Joint, Junior’s club Chulahoma location, Hyw 4 East home, Hyw 311 House Party location, Junior’s grave and The Blues Marker dedicated to Junior in the Square. 11am
