Instruction by Modern Blues Legends

Lightnin Malcolm, R.L.’s second guitarist, and drummer of 30 years. Appears on R.L.’s Grammy nominated release Roll & Tumble, and BMAward nominated Boogie w/ R.L. BOYCE Live. Lightnin has also played and recorded with Cedric Burnside, R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Paul Wine Jones, Mississippi All Stars, and Tab Benoit.

Robert Kimbrough Sr.(CPSB), Straight outta Holly Springs Mississippi, born under the sign of the blues Robert is the youngest son of Cotton Patch Blues Legend Junior Kimbrough. Junior Kimbrough was the first person who gave RL an opportunity to plays his “style” at his Juke Joint in Chulahoma, Mississippi. Robert will share his father’s guitar techniques which creates the hypnotic sounds of Cotton Patch Soul Blues. CPSB4LIFE

Brian Hurd NYC’s premiere Blues hound, who blows a mean harp fronts super hip downtown trio Daddy Long Leggs, and Howlin’ Hurd and The House Rockers. Daddy Long Leggs is very popular in Europe, and recently returned to Australia, and toured Japan. Brian is endorsed by Hohner Harmonica.

Brother Tito Deler aka Harlem Slim Uptown sharp dressed Bluesman who plays a steel body National Resonator guitar. Drawn to the Mississippi Delta blues of Willie Brown, Son House, Skip James. Tito has played with various Mississippi bluesfolk such as R.L. Boyce, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes and Leo “Bud” Welch who have mentored and embraced him as one of their own. He has played in a few Jukes and Festivals in the South including the Bentonia Blues Festival.

A dynamic multi projector video collage presentation of R.L.’s remarkable life created by Brooklyn NY artist Amy Verdon, who was a personal friend to Rl for 10 years, and represented Mr. Boyce for the last seven years of his life. Released two CD’s, one BOOGIE w/ RL BOYCE Live, nominated for BMAward, produced the R.L. BOYCE PICNIC from 2018-2023, and nominated R.L. BOYCE for the NEA National Heritage Fellowship. She is your host for the event. Amy is FANCY! And stage banner by Detroit/ Mississippi graffiti artist Michael Carter.

Within the Black community Juke Joints were common spaces that emerged within a space where people gathered to create good times. A place where one could leave their cares behind experience healing music in an accepting space with good food, corn liquor, where one could renew one’s self. R.L. was known for allowing anyone up to play. His improvisational simple repetitive style encourages the musician’s jam.

Join us for a night of mesmerizing North Mississippi Blues. Celebrating music of Hill Country Boogie King R.L. BOYCE, who dedicated 50 years of his remarkable life playing the Blues.

Sharde Thomas Rising Stars Fife & Drum Band Sharde is the granddaughter of Otha Turner, R.L. Boyce’s uncle. R.L began his musical odyssey in 1970 at age 15 as a drummer in his uncle’s Fife and Drum band. Sharde carries on one of the oldest traditions of American Blues music, a Fife and Drum marching band. This style of music are the seeds of all American pop music. Sharde appears on the soundtrack to the wildly successful film “Sinners”.

New Moon Acoustic Blues New York City’s duo the powerful, who play emotional sounds of America in the early 1900s. Singer-guitarist Karl Schwarz fluent in styles growing out of the Mississippi Delta and the Piedmont, as well as traditional gospel and spirituals. David A. Barnes blows a mean harmonica, a member group Memphis Blood.

We return to the FANCY! scene at The Hut in Holly Springs Mississippi May 12-14, 2017 for the Kimbrough Cotton-Patch Blues Festival hosted by Robert Kimbrough Sr. Joined by Little Joe Ayers and a star-studded-line-up of local legends, life long friends and family members. We are proud sponsors of this action packed Cotton-Patch throw down dedicated to the music of local musician North Hill Mississippi Blues legend David Junior Kimbrough.

Junior Kimbrough’s infectious music is synonymous with the back woods of Holly Springs in the hills of Mississippi where Junior shared his life with his family. Many of whom still live in the area today and celebrate Junior’s life with the love of his music and cherished memories of his infamous club. Junior’s three sons David, Kinney and Robert continue in their fathers path as brilliant musicians themselves. Deceptively skilled each one is an off-the-chain player. The weekend will provide an imitate environment to experience the blues the way the Kimbroughs do, as a family to ENJOY YOURSELF.

Friday May 12th
Scheduled events kick off Friday night May 12th, an opening reception for the exhibit The Life and Legacy of Junior Kimbrough at Rust College in the gallery space located in Leontyne Price Library. The exhibition will feature photos by Bill Steber, Yancey Allison, Adam Smith, David Stevens and David Katzenstein whose 1988 photos of Junior’s house party were recently featured in Oxford American. Also photos by famed folklorist Cheryl Thurber.
Unearthed live performance footage of Junior and Soul Blues Boys from The Northeast Mississippi Blues and Gospel Folk Festival at Rust College. Obscure live performance and interview film footage from rock writer Jas Obrecht collection.

Notes from Jas about the footage “Junior Kimbrough playing in his juke joint outside of Holly Springs, Mississippi, 1990-09-23 (1:02) This broadcast-quality film contains outstanding footage of Kimbrough playing in his rural juke joint with a bassist and drummer. It was shot early in the afternoon, with very few people in the juke. After his performance, Junior consented to doing an interview on film. Jas Obrecht is the primary behind-the-camera interviewer; Peter Lee, a South African who at the time was Editor of Living Blues magazine, joins in the conversation. This part of the film served as the Q/A section of the article “Junior Kimbrough: Mississippi Juke Joint Blues,” Guitar Player, Aug. ’95.”

Plus amateur photos, video, candid snap shots, newspaper clippings, magazines, personal items, and collected stories.

Many items were generously loaned from the University of Memphis Music Library, University of Mississippi Blues Archive, UNC Southern Folklife Collection at Chapel Hill, Tulane University Special Collections, and Rust College Archive.

The exhibit will run until May 31st.

Saturday May 13th

An all day guitar workshop with Robert Kimbrough Sr., David Kimbrough Jr., Kinney Kimbrough, Garry Burnside, Eric Deaton, and Joe Ayers.
Learn the Cotton-Patch guitar style from the masters themselves. Spend the day with the your heroes and learn from the pros. All of the musician learned and played with Junior. The guitar workshop provides a chance to learn and play along side master bluesmen. Robert and the crew will sit you down and teach the fundamentals of playing the blues and demonstrate their styles in an up-close and personal environment. This is an incredible opportunity to sit and observe and learn from true artists on their own turf.
The Kimbroughs, Burnsides, Eric Deaton, and Joe Ayers share an infectious enthusiasm when discussing Junior’s life and music. Generous with their knowledge on the subject of Cotton-Patch Blues Mississippi’s musician deceptively masterful skill effortlessly executed inspires. Keepers and teachers of Cotton-Patch Blues an historic American tradition that flourishes in the North Hills of Mississippi today.
They will answer questions, provide instruction and have you jamming with them before the day is done. Join Robert and the band on stage later that evening at The Hut. Beginners and seasoned ax-slingers welcome. Bring your guitar, a desire to learn and your appetite. Food will be available!

Sunday morning meet up at The Hut for a hearty country breakfast with Robert and Joe before embarking on a guided historic tour around Holly Springs. Visit sights significant to Junior’s life: Junior’s home he shared with his sons, Marshall Scrubbs Club, Sammy’s Rib Joint, Junior’s club Chulahoma location, Hyw 4 East home, Hyw 311 House Party location, Junior’s grave and The Blues Marker dedicated to Junior in the Square.

Late Sunday afternoon return to The Hut for the recreation of Sunday Night at Junior’s with an ALL STAR LINE UP many who played with Junior. Presented in the true JUKE JOINT tradition of guesting, and switching off. The night will feature The Kimbrough Brothers. Robert Kimbrough Sr., BluesConnection will be the house band for the evening.
