Roderick “Keshun” Wooten ColdWater Ms. drummer for the Soul Children, is kin to the Turners.

In celebration of Black History Month the RL BOYCE Picnic & Blues Celebration is celebrating the African American residents of Como MS. with a photo exhibition by John Shaw, and live Blues Jam with Como’s BIG BLUES MANE Grammy Nominee and MAC Fellowship Grant Recipient RL BOYCE.

John Shaw, a Tennessee photographer has documented Folk Life in Mississippi for over twenty years. He is working towards his Master Thesis in Ethnomusicology at the University of Memphis. He is widely recognized by the Blues and Folk community from his wildly popular blog, The Delta Review.

Como Bluesman RL Boyce was first recorded in 1970. Playing percussion on his 15th birthday with his Uncle, Othar Turner’s Fife and Drum band. Today in 2018 at 62 a recent Grammy nominee, we celebrate RL’s 63rd birthday. A lifetime of creating music we invite all to come and revel in his astounding achievements. Rooted in the family tradition Sherena Boyce RL’s daughter and famed #1 Juke Joint Dancer has put together a star studded Hill Country Blues line up to shake ‘em on down. To help everyone get in a hypnotic head Sherena bill two notable area family groups The Hurt Family Fife and Drum band, and Sharde Thomas and The Rising Stars. Plus a bunch of outstanding players including Kenny  Brown, Dwayne Burnside, Joyce SheWolf Jones, Cam Kimbrough, Mark Mule Man Massey, Eric Deaton and many more.

Classes begin at 10 am
Junior’s sons Robert, David and Kinney will be available for guitar, bass and drum instruction all day. Little Joe Ayers will also be available for Cotton-Patch Blues guitar lessons. David Hayden of Dallas Texas on harp will offer his knowledge on harmonica. Students will be encouraged to show-off “their” style, while the Blues Legends shares their secrets. This tour will visit the forlorn and rural graves of hill country blues artists such as R.L. Burnside, Johnny Woods, Ranie Burnette, Wilbert Lee Reliford, Sid Hemphill, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Lucius Smith, Fred McDowell, Joe Callicott, and the long mysterious final resting place of Eli Green.

Later Saturday night back at The Hut, the students will be invited on to jam with the same Blues Legends. The night will run in the traditional juke joint style of switching off with plenty of guest musicians. Fish sandwiches, burgers and cold beer will be available. The club is open to all, and locals are welcome! This type of unfiltered, smoking-hot Blues is simply what the Kimbroughs are famous for.

ride around town with Little Joe. On Sunday morning to all the local spots that pertain to Junior’s life in the Holy Springs area. The tour includes the home he shared with his sons, where Junior hosted countless house parties, Junior’s clubs, Blues Markers, Marshall Scruggs and Junior’s grave. Joe and will be on hand to tell stories, answer questions, and pose for photos.
